Enya releases her eagerly anticipated new album A Day Without Rain. The 11-track recording was composed by Enya, produced by Nicky Ryan and with lyrics from Roma Ryan.
Of A Day Without Rain Enya says, “The title refers to the mood on a particularly peaceful day on which there was no rain. We do get a lot of rain in Ireland in all seasons! We had had a run of days where it had done nothing but rain. Then one day the sun came out. It was then that I wrote the title track, so what else could I call it?”
A Day Without Rain follows 1995’s Grammy winning The Memory Of Trees. After a promotional tour in support of that album, Enya commenced composing the extra tracks for the 'Best Of’ collection, Paint The Sky With Stars. However, in the past five years, the majority of her time has been spent working on the current release, A Day Without Rain. “As I do all the vocals and harmonies, and we do not sample, this obviously takes up a considerable amount of time,” she explains. “Also, as everything you hear on the album is played by me, that too becomes a very long process. Therefore, we are inclined to take much longer in the studio than other people.”
The end result is an excellent return from an artist whose sound is synonymous with a whole genre. A Day Without Rain is a heavenly mix of ethereal vocals, cinematic atmospherics and lush harmonies. The title track opens the album with a subtle graceful air of expectancy, and is followed by the lilting “Wild Child.” The first single from the album, “Only Time,” is a sublime combination of romance and melancholy. Other highlights include the brooding gothic intensity of “Tempus Vernom,” the divine “Fallen Embers” and the catchy “Lazy Days.”
With the release of A Day Without Rain, Enya adds another fine bookmark to a uniquely enduring and fascinating career. With a glittering array of multi-million selling albums behind her – such as Watermark, Shepherd Moons, The Memory Of Trees and Paint The Sky With Stars – Enya has established a career that is a global phenomenon and a refreshing antidote to superstar pop.
A Day Without Rain is a cathedral of sound, a glorious all-enveloping choral tide.
